doWHAT? doTERRA

Where to begin so I don't make this unnecessarily long? hmmm

Essential Oils. doTERRA. Heard about it? One night, while here in Utah, I got together with 3 other of my special needs mom friends. Dinner. Yum. Fun. Laughing. Then, down to business. As much as I try to avoid these topics (because I don't want our friendship to revolve around the fact that we have special needs kids), I can't help myself. I've decided that's ok, by the way. So, we start talking and sharing what's working, what's not working, who is the best at this and that, who we should go and see, etc.

Among the many things we talked about, essential oils came up. I had already decided that I was going to try them out on Samantha when I was here for Caleb's funeral. I talked to Chrystal (I'd link you to her blog, but it's been a solid YEAR since she last posted...Chrystal!) and I was pretty much feeling good about trying it out. I liked the idea that it was natural, no real side effects. If it didn't work, it didn't work. But if it could help her sleep without meds, fantastic! Even better, if she could remain seizure-free without meds...So, why not?

So, at dinner, we talked oils. Great. Nothing new to me.

A few days later, I head on over to doTERRA, which is located in Orem. There, I signed up to be a consultant/seller/whatever-it-is-that-gives-me-a-discount. The guy said a lot of people do that, so I didn't feel so lame. I have no interest in starting a business. Making $, sure, but making sure I'm selling products...too stressful. Just give me my discount and I'll be on my way. I bought the Family Physician Kit as well that comes with Frankincense, Peppermint, Oregano, Lemon, and some other stuff.

It sits on the table for a couple days.

Friday. I wake up with a bad headache. We go to therapy. It hurts. I'm starting to be sensitive to the lights. I go to the "family" room and try to sleep. I wake up feeling worse. I'm starting to feel nauseous and I'm worried, wondering how I'll drive myself home. I'm getting worse and worse. I'm shaking and can hardly see. Migraine.

I DO make it home and go straight to bed...after taking 2 Excedrin. Are you still with me? I sleep for awhile, wake up, take 2 more Excedrin. I wake up. Bryan's over playing with the wee girlos, and I want to get up and see him before he takes off. We go for a walk to get them out of the house for a little bit and give my mom a break...and I'm feeling extremely weak and trying to fake it the best I can.

I kept feeling horrible and we had dinner plans. What to do?

I didn't want to take any more Excedrin, so I figured, maybe let's try these oils, and maybe it'll take off some of the edge if I'm lucky.

I called Chrystal for some help because I couldn't even focus my eyes enough to read the book on what to take for what, etc. Headache. Peppermint. I put a drop in my hand, and used that to apply it to my temples, forehead, and back of neck. I am NOT exaggerating when I say that almost instantaneously, when I smelled the peppermint on my hand, my headache was gone. I was in complete shock. This FAR surpassed my expectation. My stomach was a little upset still, so I thought, I'll try this other oil blend they have for upset stomachs. "As much as the peppermint helped, and I'm a believer in that now, this won't be like that. After all, I apply it to my stomach and I can't even smell it." I figured if I can't smell it, it won't work. Wrong. After only a few minutes of getting ready to go, my upset stomach was gone. GONE.

I've never, EVER used anything that worked so quickly.

I went out the next day and bought a diffuser that I will have in Samantha and Callie's room. I am a believer, and still in shock that it worked so quickly. My mom has noticed that the oils have helped her too and she's going to buy herself a Family Physicians Kit before she heads back home too. Amazing! And now, I can't stop reading the book about all the different ailments and what oils treat what symptoms and what illnesses...I'm obsessed!

And you should be too! Join me in the madness people. It's soooo cool!

The Book

He did it.  Michael Ririe got all the funds necessary to get his book published!  The Now I Can photographic documentary book will be published!!!  I can't tell you how excited I am for this.

#1 -- I love when people reach their goals.
#2 -- I love when people I like/love/admire/etc reach their goals.
#3 -- Samantha's in it.  And, well, that's just cool.
#4 -- And something I wrote is in there too...so that's kind of fun for me too.

The goal was $12,000.  He needs $16,000 to cover all expenses.  You all have put in $12,970...and the nunmbers keep increasing.  I can't believe it.  Awesome!

So, thank you all who pitched in, or who passed along an email, or posted it on facebook.  I'm so excited to see the finished project and will most likely be seeing it in March when Sammy commences her 2nd session of therapy there.

Happy New Year, indeed.

Sweatin' for Sammy 2011

It's safe to say that Sweatin' for Sammy 2011 was a huge success.  Huge.  Here's a glimpse.

Thank you to everyone who participated.  It was humbling and amazing and incredible and just...fantastic.  I will probably post more of the full details on Sammy's blog later today -- but it was truly awesome.

Life Continues...

I will be among the many -- or thousands -- who blog about the Prince and Duchess today.  The Royal Wedding.  How fabulous.  I decided not to wake up early since I went to bed so late.  But, I'm relying on Scotty and Annie to have recorded it for me.  I did, however, catch Good Morning America this morning when I woke up with Samantha, and I have to say, I thought Kate, now Catherine, looked  beautiful.  I'm all for the natural look.  Loved her hair and that gorgeous veil (I'm a veil girl)...the lace sleeves.  As if my opinion matters...I say "nicely done."  If I never get to watch the recorded wedding, then I'll watch it on their 10 year anniversay when it's rebroadcasted...like I did as a little girl watching Princess Diana marry Prince Charles.  Marcus thinks William and Kate will divorce.  I sure hope not.  I want them to be the Nicole Kidman/Tom Cruise...wait...how about the Jennifer Aniston/Brad Pitt....uh....are they really doomed?  I sure hope not.  The romantic in me still believes they'll hang on like Lucille and Desi...ahhhh.  Enough.  No more.  I see a future similar to that of Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman!  That's right.  Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson.  Will and Jada Smith...now that's what I'm talking about.  Kevin and Kyra.  Ok ok ok

I'm at the hospital today with Nathaniel.  He's doing better, though he's still heavily sedated.  It reminds me of moments in the hospital with Samantha, but this is something that Marcus and I never had to experience -- weeks in the hospital.  I feel for Scotty and Annie.

Plans for Sweatin' for Sammy are moving forward.  I can't believe it's so soon.  A woman from the newspaper came and did an interview.  She's writing an article about Samantha.  A photographer is coming on Saturday to take pictures of her.  Wow.  This seems so unreal.

I'm continuing to do what I can to prepare for Girls' Camp.  I'm excited to be one of the assistant directors, but it is one more thing to think about right now.  I'm confident in the young women I'm working with, though, so it'll all come together fine.

I take back Nathaniel being heavily sedated.  He's heavily medicated, but I just spent 15 minutes holding his hand and stroking his hair.  Everytime I stopped, he squirmed.

Callie went had a rough week last week, but the past few days she's been so sweet.  She has been actively playing and trying to engage with Samantha more.  I guess she always has, but it's just different.  It's almost as if she's matured.  Why does saying that make me tear up?  But she has.  She more clearly understands Samantha.  She jokes with her and Sammy smiles back.  Callie knows how to play differently with Samantha.  She doesn't want Samantha to go to school in the mornings because she wants her around.  It's so great to see their relationship deepen.  I love Callie.  She makes me smile every morning when she wakes up, comes in the room and says, "Good Mooooorning."

Life continues to move on.  I feel like I've been going at a frantic pace for so long.  I'm not keeping up with everything I had hoped to.  My book is on hold the past little bit as I try to be there for my own family and extended family.  But, I'm ok with that.

Ok...time to help out again...

Rett Syndrome Awareness Month

Many of you voted for Rett Syndrome when Pepsi did their Pepsi Refresh Campaign. Many of you voted for them because...many of you who are reading this blog did it for our mutual friends, Maren and Ryan, and their darling little girl Leah. Leah suffers from Rett Syndrome. But does she have to suffer much longer? I don't know. I hope not. Hopefully this funding that International Rett Syndrome Foundation won will help them get that much closer to a cure.

In the meantime, I stumbled across this video today on YouTube and I was so excited. I am excited for Leah. I am excited for Maren and Ryan. I am excited for the all-too-many sweet little girls who may one day see a reversal to their Rett Syndrome. Watch this...it really is interesting...and it makes me really happy that I voted for IRSF to win this money. They are so close to something big...right on the cusp of winning their children's lives back.

(Oh, and I just saw that on the IRSF homepage they actually link you to articles that discuss this very thing. So you can certainly read more there.)
