When someone asks you a question through a post, how am I supposed to respond? What is the proper way to do this? Marcus' aunt once asked this on her blog...and I just don't know. Am I supposed to post a comment back up in the comment section, assuming that you will come back for a looksy? hmmm Or do I send an email directly to you? I can and have done that, but sometimes I have new people come...and as much as I'd love to know you, I don't. So, being that that is the case, I don't have email addresses for all of you.
What's a girl to do?

It all depends on how much you like the person
Well I don't know what proper etiquette requires, but this is what I do: if it's someone I don't know, I check out their page, skim a blog or two, and if I'm interested I will leave a comment and in said comment reply to their comment. If they don't match any of the above criteria, I figure it's fate giving me a freebie :)
I've always had the same question! I opt to email back where possible, and hope they contact me again if I don't have an email address.
I always wonder that too, but I think general practice is to just answer the question in another comment on the same post. If a question seems really important, detailed, or off-topic, I will often email.
As long as it's on topic and you are willing to share the answer I say post it as a comment. Often people will wonder the same question and just not ask.
PS- Yes, I am one of those that you don't know. (Hope that doesn't creep you out) I stumbled across your blog not long ago and appreciate your authenticity.
Whenever I comment and think I might want to hear what other people say, I click the "email follow-up comments" box. I've had people answer on my blog too. Sometimes I facebook message if it's personal and I dont' have their email.
